The 5 Principles of Social Media Marketing

5 Principals of Social Media MarketingSocial media marketing is a highly-effective and low-cost way to promote your business, build your brand and accumulate a solid customer base.

Social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, provide free access to millions of potential customers worldwide.

However, despite the unlimited opportunities offered by these free marketing tools, many businesses are failing to make the most out of social media.

Understanding the 5 principles of social media marketing will give you a solid foundation for building your social media marketing campaign.

1. Build relationships

Businesses that use their social media accounts as their own personal advertising page fail to understand the nature of social media.

People use social media to make new friends, keep in touch with existing friends, share interesting things with people they know and generally interact with the world around them. They don’t use social media to be bombarded with advertisements and marketing material.

Building relationships with social media users is crucial to the success of your campaign.

2. Pay attention

Unlike most other marketing methods, where your message is simply delivered directly to the audience, social media marketing is an interactive tool.

Users can interact with your content in many different ways, such as commenting on it, retweeting it on Twitter, “liking” it on Facebook, forwarding it to friends and so on. This allows you to monitor the reactions to your campaign, which gives you valuable information on what works and what doesn’t.

3. Get involved

Social media platforms often give rise to lively debate and discussion of current events and popular topics.

While you may prefer to steer clear of controversial subjects, try to get involved in discussions surrounding your industry or field of expertise.

If you don’t have the time for long discussions, try adding some industry news to your social media updates and allow users to comment.

Getting involved with other users helps to build familiarity and trust.

4. Offer something of value

Social media users don’t have the time to read every piece of information that comes their way.

In order for your content to be read, you need to provide something of value for the reader. This doesn’t have to be a free giveaway or something of monetary value, but it must be something of interest to the reader.  This could be a new piece of information or the solution to a problem they are facing.

5. Reciprocate

Getting your content “retweeted”, “liked”, recommended or forwarded to other users is essential for a successful social media marketing campaign.

Every time someone passes on your content to their friends, your marketing efforts have been increased. Social media etiquette for sharing content expects users to reciprocate and return the compliment.

Sharing interesting content from other users can build profitable relationships.
