Defining Web 3.0- Semantic, 3D, Pervasive and Media-Centric

Semantic WebWeb 3.0 technology encompasses quite a few concepts and incorporates many different aspects including visual, semantic, image-related, and sound. When people refer to Web 3.0, they often use the words 3D Web, Semantic Web, Media-Centric Web, or Pervasive Web depending on their perspective. Since the Web is continually changing at this point in time with new enhancements and since visions of the future of Web 3.0 vary, no one actually knows which of these labels is going to stick. How are these different from each other and how are they similar?

The Semantic Web

The Semantic web refers to a cyber world where machines can read websites with almost humanlike ability. People can request information using their iPhone, computer, or mobile device and the device finds the information. In fact, it can do so in an interactive manner in which it can check your information such as a schedule or itinerary against that of other businesses or services to identify those that match. Ask and you shall receive.

The term, Semantic Web, is a name coined by Tim Berners-Lee. Web 3.0 offers an experience where machines can go to places that only humans were capable of going to in the past. Today, thanks to the technology of Web 3.0, software agents and search engines can do a better job of surfing the net than humans. The world of cyber space is one big database filled with trolling bots and humans.

The 3D Web

The 3D Web offers a virtual world where people can shop, search for data, buy a home, or get a loan or insurance. Interaction with others is a large part of the 3D Web. It’s a place where people can gallivant and enjoy a virtual walk through almost anyplace in the world. Web users can zoom in and observe cyberspace as though they are actually there. One example of this is the ability of prospective college students to visit a virtual college campus rather than spending the time and money to visit one in person.

The Pervasive Web

The Pervasive Web is the style of Web that many people hope the Web of today will become in the future. They want a Web that is pervasive, one that exists everywhere they can possibly imagine. Why shouldn’t they expect this and long for it? The Web has already moved on from the world of computers to the world of mobile devices. How much longer could it possibly be before it moves on into the rest of people’s lives?

Perhaps the Web can transform into a pervasive presence that assists humans in every aspect of their lives from opening doors as people approach to opening windows as the temperature changes to turning ovens off when the food is fully cooked to presenting the news as people comb their hair in front of the bathroom mirror. The pervasive Web is the one that Smart Houses incorporate into their design. It is the type of Web that appeals to those individuals who long for a futuristic lifestyle.

The Media-Centric Web

The Media-Centric Web is a world where media is king. All types of media play a role in this cyber world from words to photographs to paintings to videos to music recordings and more. It’s a useful mix of language and media where search engines perform quite differently from the manner in which they currently operate. In fact, the vision is that searches for media will no longer be driven solely by keywords. The Media-Centric Web incorporates a finely intertwined network that involves media in all shapes, styles, and sizes.
